Virgin Australia started out in 2000, under the name 'Virgin Blue', and after the collapse of Ansett Australia found themselves the second biggest airline in Australia. Starting out with only two aircraft, they have now expanded to service over 42 cities in Australia and 5 in New Zealand under the leadership of famous founder Richard Branson, who also manages the Virgin Group across the world.
Virgin Blue underwent a transformation in 2011, renaming to 'Virgin Australia', along with new aircraft, new uniforms, new menu options and a roll-out of Business Class across the network. They also purchased 'Tiger Airways Australia' in 2014 and run it as a low cost carrier across Australia.
Virgin's fleet currently numbers 94 (with 48 new aircraft on order), including A320's and Boeing 787's. They have a number of partner airlines, including Delta, Etihad, South African and Singapore Airlines, opening up many more destinations across the world for passengers.
As of 2019, Virgin have begun flying direct from their hub in Brisbane to Tokyo.
Virgin Australia fly from Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown and Dunedin. All flights transit an Australian, east-coast hub such as Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Flights from Auckland also fly direct to the Gold Coast.
From Australia, Virgin flights go all over the world, including the United States, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific and Europe. Some flights may be operated by partner airlines such as Delta, Singapore Airlines or Etihad. Virgin Australia also operate an extensive network across Australia, along with their subsidiary Tiger, so you can get anywhere you need to in Aus.
