Destination Profile
Dunedin is New Zealand with a twist of Scotland. Laced with Gothic monuments, crowned with a grand Victorian train terminal, and even imbued with an honorific bronze of the bard Robert Burns, the town brings a taste of Edinburgh to the rolling hills of Otago. But the Kiwis have injected their own charms, too. Surf beaches like Sandfly and Smails bring the boarders. Rugby stadiums still roar with the revered name of the region's greatest star – 'Richie McCaw!' Oh, and you don't have to drive far to reach the Otago winelands or the wild Southern Alps. Cheap flights to Dunedin head to Dunedin International. Most direct connections are domestic, but longer routes do connect with Australia as well.
Dunedin Railway Station looks like it could have been plucked straight out of the Low Countries. It's famed for its striking Flemish flurries and colonnades.
See one of the wonders of the Otago coast at the Moeraki Boulders. They speckle Koekohe Beach, and have strange geological tales to tell.
Brighton Beach runs between rocky outcrops just south of Dunedin. It's wide, blustery, and bashed by waves – perfect for romantic strolls come sunset.
