Qatar Airways, often simply called 'Qatar', begun flying in 1994 and are the national carrier for the country of Qatar. The airline has expanded rapidly since it began, now servicing over 150 international destinations from their hub in Doha, across six continents.

Qatar have been a member of the Oneworld alliance since October 2013, and were the first airline in the 'Gulf' area to sign up to an airline alliance. They are also partnered with over 25 airlines worldwide, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific and American Airlines. Their fleet currently consists of over 200 aircraft, with over 150 further on order, and consists of a range of Boeing 777 and 787's, as well as Airbus A380, A350, A320's with A321's on order.

Qatar also run their own airline catering company, called 'Qatar Aircraft Catering Company. Qatar Airways Cargo, the airline's freight branch, is the world's third largest international cargo carrier.

Qatar Airways have been voted Airline of the Year by Skytrax in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and most recently in 2019, plus they have been one of the few airlines awarded the prestigious Skytrax five-star rating. They have also recently received the 'Best Seat Comfort', 'Best Cabin Service' and 'Best Food and Beverage' by APEX.

Where can I catch Qatar Airways flights?

Currently, passengers can fly direct to Qatar from Auckland. Qatar also have a partnership agreement with Air New Zealand, so passengers from other New Zealand cities can board a Qatar flight which transits via Sydney. The first sector between New Zealand and Australia will be operated by Air New Zealand, and from Sydney flights are direct to Doha, Qatar's hub. From there passengers can fly to a broad range of destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania.

The Hamad International Airport has been recently completed and features a range of updated facilities. Qatar also offer attractive stopover options, and a 30-day visa waiver for New Zealand passport holders.

Making the most of Qatar Sale Deals

Although Qatar don't run set weekly or monthly sales like some airlines, they do regularly feature a range of different sales throughout the year! Some recurring ones include Boxing Day (December 26th), Black Friday (after Thanksgiving), and others.

They may also feature flash sales, Earlybird sales (for fares booked several months in advance), companion sales (for two or more passengers in one booking), 72-hour or Weekend sales, as well as destination-specific sales, with discounted fares to the U.S, Europe, Africa and more. They also sometimes run sales specifically for Business Class.

There is a dedicated 'offers' page on their website, or you can sign up to their emails to be notified of any future deals. Or just sign up with us, and we will always let you know about the best fares!

How to Check-In for Qatar Flights

Qatar allow you to check in either online, via their app, or in person at the airport. Online check-in is available 48 hours to 90 minutes before flight departure, except for flights to the U.S, in which case check-in opens 24 hours prior to departure from Doha.

Mobile boarding passes are enabled for all New Zealand airports, and there is a baggage check-in system called 'My Q-Tag', which allows passengers to print their baggage tags at home and check bags in at the 'Web Check-in Bag Drop', available at New Zealand airports.

To check in at the airport counter, check directly with the airport website for the exact time the counter opens. However, in general check-in counters are open 3 hours prior to departure for international flights.

The Qatar Frequent Flyer Program

The Qatar Airways Frequent Flyer Program is called the 'Privilege Club', and is free to join for any passengers over 12 years old. Passengers can earn 'Qmiles' with Qatar flights, as well as on flights with 'Oneworld' alliance airlines and Qatar's airline partners. Points can also be earned with Qatar's worldwide network of partners, on car hire, accommodation, banking and credit cards and other travel services.

There are four tiers to the 'Privilege Club' Qmiles program, beginning at entry-level with Burgundy, and heading through Gold and Silver status to Platinum.

There are various extra benefits associated with being a Privilege Club member, including extra baggage allowances, lounge access, priority boarding and more, depending on which tier of membership you hold.
