All About Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines began flying in 1929 as 'Inter-Island Airways'. They changed their name to 'Hawaiian Airlines' in 1941 and are the flag carrying airline for Hawaii.

They are currently the 10th largest airline in the United States and operate out of their main hub at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on the island of Oʻahu, and they also have a secondary hub out of Kahului Airport on the island of Maui. There is also a crew-base in Los Angeles. Hawaiian Airlines also operate 'Ohana by Hawaiian', a regional subsidiary carrier.

The airline currently fly direct to 31 destinations in the United States (including Hawaii), Asia and the South Pacific, and also has codeshare and interline agreements with 12 major airlines across the world, allowing their network to expand to over 75 destinations worldwide. Their fleet currently numbers 61 aircraft, including Boeing 717's, Airbus A330 and A321-neo's. They also have ten Boeing 787's on order.

Hawaiian Airlines have won many awards over the last few years, including 'Best Economy Class Airline' at the Australian Travel Awards, 'Best Airline Staff - North America' from Skytrax plus a variety of others, and they are widely recognised as being the most on-time airline in the U.S.

Hawaiian Airlines are easily recogniseable by their colourful planes adorned with flowers (the 'Pualani', Flower of the Sky) and bright livery (staff wear Hawaiian shirts), which pay homage to the beautiful island nation they hail from.

Where can I catch Hawaiian Airlines flights?

Hawaiian Airlines currently fly direct from Auckland to Honolulu.

From Honolulu, which is their hub, passengers can then fly onwards to a variety of destinations, including the other Hawaiian Islands, the United States, Japan, Korea and the South Pacific.

Hawaiian Airlines also offer a range of further destinations with their codeshare partners, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines, as well as a larger range of U.S destination

Making the most of Hawaiian Airlines sale deals

Hawaiian Airlines don't have a regular weekly or monthly sale date, like some lower cost carriers. They do have regular sales though, all throughout the year. Some of these include Boxing Day (December 26th), Black Friday (after Thanksgiving) and Cyber Monday.

They may also feature flash sales, 'Anniversary' sales, Earlybird sales (for fares booked several months in advance) and destination-specific sales, with discounted fares to the U.S and other Hawaiian islands.

There is a dedicated 'deals and offers' page on their website, or you can sign up to their emails to be notified of any future deals. Or just sign up with us, and we will let you know about any great fares to Hawaii!

Hawaiian Airlines Fare Types and Baggage Information

Hawaiian Airlines have three main fare types for flights from New Zealand: Economy, Economy Comfort (similar to Premium Economy) and Business/First Class.

All fares receive baggage and meals, however the 'Economy Comfort' fares have extra legroom, priority boarding and a range of other benefits.

Passengers with frequent flyer membership have extra baggage priveliges. Flights to and from the mainland U.S, or inter-island flights that aren't booked on the same ticket as an international flight, may incur baggage fees. It is recommended that passengers book their entire flight, even with a stop in Hawaii (or visiting multiple islands), on the one ticket to maximise their free baggage allowance.

How to Check-In for Hawaiian Airlines Flights

You can check in for your Hawaiian Airlines flight either online, via the Hawaiian Airlines app (available for both iOS and Android), or in person at the airport. However, due to the ESTA-waiver requirements for international visitors, passengers may still need to visit the airport counter even if they have checked in online.

Check in via the app or online opens 24 hours prior to departure. You can also choose seats, pay for extras or upgrade.

Self-serve kiosks are also available at Auckland airport, which allow passengers to check in, choose seats and check their baggage.

To check in at the airport counter, check directly with the airport website for the exact time the counter opens. However, in general check-in counters are open 3 hours prior to departure for international flights.

The Hawaiian Airlines Frequent Flyer Program

'HawaiianMiles' is the name of the The Hawaiian Airlines' frequent-flyer program, and has been operating since 1983. Signing up to HawaiianMiles allows passengers to earn 'miles', or points, on flights, and is unique in the fact that it bases its points off miles flown, rather than dollars spent (so even if you got your fare on sale, you still get the same amount of points per journey). Points can also be accumulated on partner airline flights, hotels, car rentals, shopping, dining and credit cards.

Points are able to be used to book flights, upgrade your flight or even as discounts on services such as car hire, dining, accommodtion and other partner offers. Miles can also be bought, as well as donated.

The program also offers more benefits to passengers who fly regularly, called the 'Pualani Elite' program. Customers with 20,000 miles qualify for 'Pualani Gold' and 40,000 miles for 'Pualani Platinum' status. Members with this status are eligible for a range of benefits, including seat upgrades, free luggage, priority boarding, lounge access and more.

Membership to the 'Pualani Elite' program can also be purchased for an annual fee.
